Create, review, and expand rubrics
Create or enhance SOLO-taxonomy aligned rubric descriptions and student-facing criteria, from inputs like criterion statements or course learning outcomes.
How to generate SOLO taxonomy-aligned rubric descriptors from your existing course learning outcomes and marking criteria
This demonstrates using a specialised AI assistant to generate constructively aligned rubric descriptors based on the SOLO taxonomy. By providing existing course learning outcomes (CLOs) and marking criteria, educators can quickly draft detailed, level-differentiated performance standards for an assessment; alternatively, educators can receive feedback on their existing rubric items singly or in bulk. This process saves significant time in rubric development, however the AI-generated output must be carefully reviewed and refined by the educator to ensure it is contextually appropriate and fit-for-purpose before being used with students.
00:02Select the 'Rubricker' persona. From the persona selection menu, find and choose the 'Rubricker' assistant.00:06Start the conversation. You can use a suggested prompt like 'Where do I begin?' to receive instructions on what information the assistant needs.00:22Paste your CLOs and marking criteria. In the message box, paste the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and the marking criteria for your specific assessment item. Ensure they are clearly separated.00:33Generate the rubric descriptors. Send the message to the AI. It will first derive a set of student-facing rubric criteria and then generate SOLO-aligned descriptors for each grade level (e.g., HD, DN, CR, PA, NS).00:52Review the generated rubric. Carefully read through the suggested criteria and the performance descriptors for each grade. Check that they accurately reflect the expectations for the assessment task.01:35Ask follow-up questions to refine the output. If you need to align the rubric with specific standards (like the Australian Qualifications Framework) or make other adjustments, ask the AI to refine its suggestions.02:11Request a new version based on the refinements. Use a prompt like 'Use those criteria and develop rubric statements for them' to generate a new, updated rubric based on the refined criteria from the previous step.
Tool | The tool used is RMIT's Val (Virtual Assistant for Learning AI). |
|---|---|
AI Persona | The demonstration uses the 'Rubricker' persona, which is specialised for creating SOLO taxonomy-aligned rubrics. |
Example prompt | The user pasted a block of text containing their CLOs and marking criteria, then asked the follow-up question: "Would these rubric criteria statements be appropriate for AQF7?" |
Important Caveat | As with any generated output, you must ensure the rubric is fit-for-purpose before using it with an assessment item. |

- Brainstorm ideas and generate drafts — This process uses AI to generate a first draft of a complex assessment rubric, which the educator can then refine.
- Apply discipline-specific context — The quality of the rubric depends on providing specific course learning outcomes and marking criteria from a particular discipline.
- Refine and iterate prompts — The user engages in a conversational turn with the AI, asking follow-up questions to refine the initial output for a specific context (AQF7).
- Apply human judgement to validate AI outputs — The process requires the educator to critically review the generated rubric to ensure its quality and appropriateness for the assessment.
